Chemical Peels

At MONA Dermatology we believe that Chemical Peels are an excellent choice if you are looking for a safe and noninvasive way to improve skin texture, tone, pore size, brown spots, fine lines, acne, and acne scarring. Click the arrow to learn more about peels.

For many people who have not had one, the words “chemical peel” seem to conjure fear and images of red peeling skin. I want to dispel these fears and educate you on the various reasons and types of peels that are out there. A chemical peel is simply the application of different chemicals that cause the skin to exfoliate and eventually peel off. You will see an improvement in texture, brown spots, pore size, acne scarring, fine lines as well as fresher and more vibrant skin. There are three different types of peels: superficial, medium and deep peels, each of which has their own place in treating skin concerns.

Our staff will help you determine which peel can best address your specific skin concerns. For most superficial peels, we recommend a series of 3-6 peels followed by one every 3 to 4 months for maintenance. Remember that aging does not happen overnight, so neither does the solution.

Commonly Asked Questions:
How long is my appointment?
Appointments can take anywhere from 30-40 minutes

Do peels hurt?
They should not hurt. You may feel a slight tingling sensation that can last for a few minutes and then dissipates.

Are chemical peels safe?
Peels are safe when done under the care of an experienced practitioner. You should always consult your provider to choose the right peel for your skin. Please stop any retinoic acid product such as Retin-A or retinols and your acne regimen 5 days prior to your peel for best results. Do not do peels if you have been on Accutane within the last 6 months. How you take care of your skin after the peel is also important. Consult your provider about the best options after your peel.

What should I expect?
Some peels actually do not peel. The Glytone peels have the Enerpeel technology, which stimulates change to the skin without peeling. Other peels, such as the Vitalize and Rejuvenize peels will start flaking 2 days after the peel and can last for 3-5 days. Your post care will help you heal more quickly and get back to your every day.

When will I start seeing results?
You should see results with your first peel, but for optimum results, peels should be done in a series every 3 to 6 weeks.

Am I a candidate?
Almost everyone is a candidate for a peel.

MICRO-NEEDLING : COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY
MICRO-NEEDLING : COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY

MICRO-NEEDLING : COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY

Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), is a new way to rejuvenate the skin, treat fine lines and wrinkles as well as acne, other scars and stretch marks. Read more and discover commonly asked questions.

Collagen and elastin are one of the primary building blocks of our skin and create what I like to call the “filling in the mattress of our skin.” As we age though, our collagen production not only slows down but we also start to break down the collagen and elastin that we do have. The loss of collagen leads to fine lines, wrinkles, increased pore size, and overall aging.

During Microneedling, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin which in turn triggers the production of collagen and elastin. Increasing your skin’s collagen and elastin leads to younger looking, thicker skin with improved texture.

In this procedure, we draw your blood in the office and spin it down to collect the platelet rich portion. The platelet-rich portion contains growth factors that stimulate cellular regeneration and new tissue growth and also promote healing and repair of sun damaged skin. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Growth Factor Serums are often used with micro-needling for additional collagen stimulation

Commonly Asked Questions:
How long is my appointment?
Appointment time depends on the area we are treating. A small scar may only take a few minutes while treating a larger area may take 30 minutes. Once you arrive, the area will be cleansed and numbed for 20-30minutes prior to your treatment time.

Does Microneedling hurt?
Our providers will do everything they can to minimize discomfort with topical numbing creams we apply for you in the office. Microneedling feels like a rough cat’s tongue and is very tolerable.

Is Microneedling safe?
Micro-needling is a very safe procedure in the hands of a trained provider. Using the Microneedling pens, we can create a very controlled injury that is safe and adjustable to your needs

What should I expect?
Prior to the treatment:
When you arrive your skin will be cleansed and a topical anesthetic will be applied 20 to 30 minutes prior to your treatment.

During the treatment:
Once you are ready, the anesthetic will be removed and your skin will be cleansed again prior to your treatment. Your skin care provider will determine the appropriate treatment depth based on your needs, and after a thin layer of serum is applied to your skin, the Microneedling pen is gently glided across your skin. This results in thousands of microscopic channels throughout the entire treatment area. The repair process, or Collagen Induction Therapy, begins almost immediately and fibroblasts start synthesizing new collagen

After your treatment:
Your skin may be pink and there may be a small amount of pinpoint bleeding. The pinkness and bleeding will fade quickly and usually resolves within a few hours to a couple days. It is important not to apply anything other than what is recommended to the treated skin, especially for the first 12-24 hours, since the micro-injuries need time to heal.
You can wash your face 12 hours after the procedure and we encourage you to use mineral-based make-up since this is healthier for the skin.

When will I start seeing results?
You may see results after your first treatment, but most people will see more improvement after 3 treatments since collagen takes 3 months to visibly develop. You may see faster results when combined with the PRP. Patients with deep wrinkles, advanced sun damage, stretch marks, or any type of scars, usually require 6 or more treatments to achieve the desired results.
We recommend 3-6 treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart

Will there be downtime?
You may be pink and slightly swollen for the first 1 to 4 days but most people find that they can go to work the next day.

Am I a candidate?
Almost everyone is a candidate, even people with darker skin. This is also an ideal treatment for people who do not want a laser treatment but want more than what peels can offer them.

Preparing for your micro-needling treatment:

  • Avoid retinoids for 5 days prior to your treatment. Do not schedule if you have been on Accutane/Isotretinoin within the last 6 months
  • Avoid sun exposure to the treated area for 2 to 5 days before your treatment
  • If having micro-needling with PRP, be sure to drink lots of fluids several hours before your appointment to allow for a successful blood draw. If you are dehydrated and we cannot obtain enough blood, your appointment will need to be rescheduled or done without PRP.

What to expect and post-treatment instructions for micro-needling:

  • During the first 1-3 days you will look red (like a sunburn) and your skin may feel warm and tight.
  • During the first 3 days: use a gentle cleanser, sunscreens and gentle moisturizers. Apply 1% hydrocortisone as needed for itching after 24 hours. Avoid swimming, strenuous activity, exercising and sun exposure.
  • We highly recommend using SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex, SkinMedica Essential Serum or Alastin Nectar between and after your treatments to accelerate and maintain your results.
  • Avoid makeup, retinoids, glycolic acids, vitamin C products, sunscreens, and Essential Serum the first night.
  • Additional instructions when PRP is used:
Avoid retinoids for 2 weeks and avoid lasers and IPL treatments to the treated areas for 4 weeks after the treatment (although they may be performed before the treatment.)
Facials

Facials

If you are looking for a no downtime way to achieve a youthful glow to your skin, one of our medical facials may be the answer. These treatments are designed to do more than just make your skin feel good. They can improve the texture, tone and overall quality of your skin to enhance your active lifestyle. Types of facials include Salt Facial and Oxygen Facial. Click the arrow to learn more.

Intraceuticals Oxygen Facial

Whether you have rosacea, sensitive skin or just want to look refreshed before an important event, the Intraceutical Oxygen Facial may be the treatment for you. Read more and discover commonly asked questions.

Intraceuticals is an oxygen facial that uses oxygen to deliver serums deep into your pores. These specially formulated serums contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring building block in your skin that helps to maintain your skin’s hydration. As we get older, our ability to make hyaluronic acid declines, leaving our skin more dehydrated. This is this important because dehydration is a key factor contributing to the formation of redness, inflammation, irritation, uneven skin tone as well as fine lines and aging skin.

By delivering hyaluronic acid and balancing the hydration of your skin, Intraceutical treatments leave your skin looking younger, more luminous and hydrated with a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Anyone can benefit from an Intraceutical treatment, but they are especially good for patients with sensitive or rosacea-prone skin. They are also a perfect adjunct and help speed the healing process when combined with any of our laser treatments or chemical peels.

The Salt Facial System

The Salt facial is a gentle and effective way to restore, rejuvenate and replenish your skin in three gentle and effective steps. We use natural sea-salt to gently exfoliate the top layer of your skin, getting it ready for the next step. We then use a deep penetrating ultrasound to deliver hydrating antioxidants into your skin. In the last and final step, we use an LED light to help to build collagen, decrease redness and treat acne. Whether you want to treat acne, rosacea or if you just want a no downtime rejuvenating procedure, the Salt Facial is a great choice.

With the salt facial, your skin will feel smooth after salt exfoliation and have a nice pink glow.
