Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) harnesses your own body's ability to rejuvenate itself. In this procedure, we draw your blood in the office and spin it down to collect the platelet rich portion. The platelet-rich portion contains growth factors that stimulate cellular regeneration and new tissue growth and also promote healing and repair of sun damaged skin.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Growth Factor Serums are often used with micro-needling for additional collagen stimulation. Who can benefit from this treatment?
- Facial Rejuvenation
- Acne Scarring
- Hair Loss
Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), is a new way to rejuvenate the skin, treat fine lines and wrinkles as well as acne, other scars and stretch marks. Your results can be enhanced when we combine Microneedling with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).
Collagen and elastin are one of the primary building blocks of our skin and create what I like to call the “filling in the mattress of our skin.” As we age though, our collagen production not only slows down but we also start to break down the collagen and elastin that we do have. The loss of collagen leads to fine lines, wrinkles, increased pore size, and overall aging.
During Microneedling, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin which in turn triggers the production of collagen and elastin. Increasing your skin’s collagen and elastin leads to younger looking, thicker skin with improved texture.
Commonly Asked Questions:
How long is my appointment?
Appointment time depends on the area that we treat. Treatment can vary from 30-60 minutes.
Does PRP with or without Microneedling hurt?
Our providers will do everything they can to minimize discomfort with topical numbing creams we apply for you in the office. With PRP you may feel some tightening and swelling which will last for a few hours.
Is Microneedling safe?
This is a very safe procedure in the hands of a trained provider. There is no risk of allergic reaction since we are using your own platelet-rich plasma.
What should I expect?
It depends on whether we are treating your face or scalp.
Prior to the treatment:
When you arrive we will draw your blood, spin it down. Depending on the area we will be treating, we may apply a topical anesthetic to make you more comfortable.
During the treatment:
Once you are ready, the anesthetic will be removed and your skin will be cleansed again prior to your treatment. When treating your scalp, the PRP will be injected along the areas of hair loss to help stimulate hair growth. When treating facial rejuvenation and acne scarring, your skin care provider will determine the appropriate treatment depth based on your needs, and after a thin layer of serum is applied to your skin, the Microneedling pen is gently glided across your skin. This results in thousands of microscopic channels throughout the entire treatment area. The repair process, or Collagen Induction Therapy, begins almost immediately and fibroblasts start synthesizing new collagen
After your treatment:
When treating your scalp, you will feel like you are wearing a tight ball cap but this will only last for a few hours. When treatign your face, your skin may be pink and there may be a small amount of pinpoint bleeding. The pinkness and bleeding will fade quickly and usually resolves within a few hours to a couple days. It is important not to apply anything other than what is recommended to the treated skin, especially for the first 12-24 hours, since the micro-injuries need time to heal.
You can wash your face 12 hours after the procedure and we encourage you to use mineral-based make-up since this is healthier for the skin.
When will I start seeing results?
You may see results after your first treatment, but most people will see more improvement after 3 treatments.
We recommend 3-6 treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart
Will there be downtime?
When treating your scalp, you will feel tight like you are wearing a ball cap for few hours but no visible downtime. When treating the face, you may be pink and slightly swollen for the first 1 to 4 days but most people find that they can go to work the next day.
Am I a candidate?
Almost everyone is a candidate, even people with darker skin.
Preparing for your micro-needling treatment:
- Avoid retinoids for 5 days prior to your treatment. Do not schedule if you have been on Accutane/Isotretinoin within the last 6 months
- Avoid sun exposure to the treated area for 2 to 5 days before your treatment
If having micro-needling with PRP, be sure to drink lots of fluids several hours before your appointment to allow for a successful blood draw. If you are dehydrated and we cannot obtain enough blood, your appointment will need to be rescheduled or done without PRP.
What to expect and post-treatment instructions for micro-needling:
- During the first 1-3 days you will look red (like a sunburn) and your skin may feel warm and tight.
- During the first 3 days: use a gentle cleanser, sunscreens, and gentle moisturizers. Apply 1% hydrocortisone as needed for itching after 24 hours. Avoid swimming, strenuous activity, exercising and sun exposure.
- We highly recommend using SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex, SkinMedica Essential Serum or Alastin Nectar between and after your treatments to accelerate and maintain your results.
- Avoid makeup, retinoids, glycolic acids, vitamin C products, sunscreens, and Essential Serum the first night.
Additional instructions when PRP is used:
Avoid retinoids for 2 weeks and avoid lasers and IPL treatments to the treated areas for 4 weeks after the treatment (although they may be performed before the treatment.)
